Alessandro Salvi is a PhD student at Politecnico di Milano. After receiving his high school diploma in Chemistry, he enrolled at Politecnico di Milano, where he graduated in 2021 defending a master’s thesis on Circular Economy, carried out in the Mat4En2 research group. During his studies, he had the chance to spend periods abroad at PUC (Chile) and POLYMTL (Canada), where he acquired skills in Bioseparations and Catalysis. His PhD project, in collaboration with ABB, focuses on the development of recycling strategies for thermoplastic and thermosetting insulating materials used in the electrical sector, with an eye to both the environmental sustainability and techno-economical aspects of the processes.

Research topics:

  • ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY

Detailed topics:

Insulating polymers used in the electrical sector are mostly represented by PE, PP, and PVC as thermoplastics and XLPE as thermosetting. The development of recycling processes for those materials represents one of the main challenges that the electrical industry will have to face in the near future to comply with the more and more strict EU directives. The research project will consist of three main phases: In the first phase, the properties of the materials will be investigated with different instrumental characterization techniques. The second phase foresees the study and design of sustainable, viable, and cost-effective recycling processes for the investigated materials. Finally, the third phase will be focused on the assessment of the environmental performance of the recycling processes.
